It took 148 days for Darcy Gaechter to kayak the Amazon River source to sea. She began in the Andes mountains of Peru, and we typically don’t think of the Amazon as having waters with near freezing temperatures. If she didn’t fall victim to the near sub zero waters or the month long class 5 rapids, paddling 4 arduous months of flat water with river pirates, narco drug traffickers, local tribal villages along the banks, or remnants of militant groups were an even more dangerous threat.
